Discovering Colorado Wine with Carboy Winery

colorado industry montana rae podcast sustainable winemaking Apr 19, 2022

We spend a lot of time tasting and talking about wines from all over the world. This week, we're bringing it closer to home with a look at the viticulture and winemaking right here in Colorado. Until about a year ago, I hadn't tasted many wines from my home state. By connecting with the team at Carboy Winery, I've been shown a whole new side of an industry evolving and expanding right under my nose.

On this week's episode of The Wine Ship Podcast, I'm introducing you to Carboy winemaker, Tyzok Wharton (above left), who offers personalized insight into this leading company in Colorado wine production. Tyzok shares his story as a winemaker from urban wineries around California, to Argentina, and ultimately to this role at Carboy. We discuss the benefits and challenges of the growing conditions in the Western Slope and the importance of the collaborative relationship between the winemaker and growers like Kaibab Sauvage (pictured right) of Sauvage Spectrum Estate Winery.

During the interview, I asked Tyzok what he'd like to be doing if he wasn't a winemaker. He told me he'd like to be designing movie soundtracks. I loved this answer so I asked him to create a playlist to pair with one of his favorite wines from Carboy, the Cabernet Franc. Have a listen and check out this and all the other awesome wines available on the Carboy online store!

Later this week, my team and I are headed out to Palisade to join the Carboy team as they celebrate the opening of their new Palisade Tasting Room and vineyard, and to connect with other producers, growers, and hospitality industry players. We'll be sharing the experience on Instagram, so be sure to follow along @thewineshipYou know we've got a Palisade Travel Guide in your future too!

Carboy has four locations where you can experience the wines in Denver, Littleton, Breckenridge, and now this brand new Palisade tasting room. We're headed to the Littleton winery for a tour and tasting on Friday, May 8. Check out all the details here and sign up! Only a few spots remain....

Cheers! - Montana and The Wine Ship Cru
