Aging and Storing Sparkling Wine
- Like still wines, sparkling wine should be properly stored in a dark place with constant cool temperature.
- Make sure to avoid direct sunlight and heat.
- Ideally store in a wine fridge (not the refrigerator) or a dark closet with a consistent temperature of 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Unlike still wine, it is recommended to store sparkling wines upright, for short term storage. This prevents the cork from getting too moist, and allowing oxidation, which could result in the flavors being tainted. A moist cork could also end up increasing the carbonation of the wine, resulting in a sparkling wine that’s too fizzy.
- However, If you are holding onto a vintage Champagne it is best to store it horizontally for long-term storage.
- Store bottles with the label facing you to avoid too much handling of the bottles to avoid altering the fizz content, flavors and the aromas of the wine.
What if my bottle is already open?!
- It is a myth that a teaspoon in the bottle will help to keep the effervescence of the open bubbly. A Champagne stopper is the best solution, or the Coravin Sparkling™ Sparkling Wine Preservation System.
- Store upright in the fridge where it will not experience too much movement (avoid the door).
How to Open Sparkling Wine
Most of us get pretty excited when it's time to pop a bottle of bubbly, but pulling the cork can be a little intimidating! Worry not. The Wine Ship's Certified Sommelier, Montana Rae, is here to offer you a no-fuss, no-fail approach to loosening the cork.
Glassware
- Because drinking champagne usually signifies a celebratory moment, you are going to want it in a glass that represents that special time. With the many different types of sparkling wine, it only makes sense that there be a few different glasses to choose from as well. Here are the four most popular types of sparkling wine glasses:
- Flute: The flute is the most popular type of glass for sparkling wine. It has an elongated shape with a tall, thin stem that makes it easy to hold when cheersing or doing a toast.
- Tulip: The tulip-shaped wine glass is similar to the flute with a long stem, but has a more narrow top and wider bow. This shape is meant to trap the aromas of the sparkling wine inside, giving you a better overall flavor and taste.
- Stemless: This is a more unique style of champagne glass that has no stem at all. This shape was designed to maximize taste and be harder to knock over.
- Coup: The coup is a more traditional style of a wine glass. It has a short stem and wide bowl that does not hold as much bubbly as the others, but looks very sophisticated and elegant when you hold it.
- Clean glassware is so important. Having a glass with residual soap can affect the effervance of the bubbles. A polishing cloth can help with this (see Shop Retail).
