Discover Colorado Wine with Carboy Winery’s Tyzok Wharton

At The Wine Ship, my days are spent immersed in the world of wines, continuously exploring and dissecting various flavors and discussions from every corner of the globe. However, this week, we are transitioning our focus and shifting closer to home to delve into Colorado's rich viticulture and winemaking scene.

Remarkably, not too long ago, I had yet to savor many wines crafted within the borders of my state. A serendipitous connection with the team at Carboy Winery has unveiled a whole new realm of possibilities, exposing an industry that has been quietly evolving and expanding right under my nose.

In this episode of The Wine Ship Podcast, I am pleased to introduce you to Carboy's talented and passionate winemaker, Tyzok Wharton (pictured on the left). Tyzok imparts his personal journey through this interview, sharing tales of his experiences at urban wineries in California, his adventures in Argentina, and his current significant role at Carboy.

Together, we delve into a fascinating discussion about the unique benefits and challenges presented by the growing conditions of the Western Slope, as well as the crucial collaborative relationship between winemakers and growers like Kaibab Sauvage (pictured on the right). Kaibab is the brilliant mind behind Sauvage Spectrum Estate Winery, who exemplifies this symbiotic partnership.

During our conversation, I couldn't help but inquire about Tyzok's alternate path had he not chosen the noble pursuit of winemaking. His veritably enchanting response revealed a hidden passion for designing awe-inspiring movie soundtracks. Intrigued by this revelation, I asked him to create a playlist that would harmonize with one of his favorites from Carboy's unparalleled collection: the Grand Valley Cabernet Franc.

Prepare to be inspired and captivated as you embark on a sensory journey, experiencing the splendid wines this pioneering Colorado institution offers.

Carboy now offers four distinct locations in Colorado, inviting wine enthusiasts to embark on a sensory exploration of local wine. Immerse yourself in the heart of Denver, Littleton, and Breckenridge, where each destination uniquely showcases many exceptional wines. Most recently, Carboy has opened a brand-new tasting room and state-of-the-art winery facility in Palisade, an endeavor that came to fruition in the spring of 2022.
